Sewing Machines are essential in garment construction. They are categorized based on their functionality, and they have also been categorized depending on their features like sewing, quilting and embroidery. Sewing Machines can be categorized into five types:

  1. Mechanical Sewing Machine
  2. Electronic Sewing Machine
  3. Computerized or Automated Sewing Machine
  4. Embroidery Machine
  5. Serger

Here I will tell you about them one by one in detail.

1. MECHANICAL SEWING MACHINES

Often referred as manual machines/ tailoring machines/ domestic sewing machines where the basic settings are done by user. Looking into its features - it has a built in pressure feet, adjustable stitch length, bottom loading bobbin, adjustable tension, single (straight and reverse) stitch. These are mostly made up of aluminium and usually found in black colour. These machines are heavy( 5 kg / 11 pounds approx ) when compared to electronic machines. These machines are easy to handle and can be repaired even at home.

2. ELECTRONIC SEWING MACHINES

Electronic sewing machines have more features than mechanical sewing machines.These are free arm and motorized machines with light weight and compact size. Coming into its features, these are useful for - good quality of stitching, minimum of seven inbuilt stitch capability, embroidering, hemming, blind stitch, button hole stitch, hemming zip fixing, smocking, reverse stitch lever, stretch stitching, quilting, built in needle threader, top loading drop in bobbin, automatic thread cutter, twin needle capability, adjustable stitch length and width, adjustable pressure foot, adjustable needle positioning, attachment options for other features.

3. COMPUTERIZED SEWING MACHINES

Computerized sewing machines are high technology sewing machines which can be connected to computers, internet, or design loaded cards. These are mainly used for industrial purposes. These have inbuilt sewing capacity of a minimum of 50 and maximum of 200. These are big in size with multiple needles, multiple spool spinners for many kind of crafting. These machines work very fast and efficiently.

4. EMBROIDERY SEWING MACHINE

Embroidery sewing machines are meant for designing different patterns of embroidery on the fabric. Electronic machines can be converted into embroidery machines by attaching an embroidery foot with it.  Electronic sewing machine also have some embroidery stitches in built. The embroidery machines are the best choice for professionals / tailors.

5. SERGER

,, also known as over lock sewing machine. These are used to seam or over lock the fabric. This machine has inbuilt cutter, a blade to cut the uneven edges of the fabric while edging the garments or textile. Generally the sergers are used in textile or garment industry or by professional sewers. These machines are very fast and time saving.
